Why The Kubano Typeface Became My Secret Branding Weapon

I’ll admit it: I was skeptical. My client’s brief for their new artisan bakery was full of words like “joyful,” “authentic,” and “handcrafted.” The mood board was a beautiful mess of textured paper, crusty sourdough shots, and warm, earthy tones. But my first logo sketches felt stiff, trapped in a grid. I opened a blank brand board, dragged a placeholder headline into the logo slot, and typed a generic bakery name. It looked corporate. It wasn’t right.

That’s when I dropped in The Kubano. Immediately, the whole vibe shifted. The quirky, handwritten letterforms danced off the baseline with a genuine, unpolished energy. It wasn’t trying to be perfect; it was trying to be real. This wasn’t just a font; it was a personality injected directly into the design file.

A Visual Character That Speaks Before You Read

The Kubano’s charm is in its details. Its strokes have a playful, almost casual variation in weight, like someone sketching with a confident marker. The lowercase ‘a’ has that lovely open-top bowl, and the ‘g’ has a distinctive, friendly tail. There’s a slight bounce to the letter spacing that prevents it from feeling too dense, giving it an airy, approachable feel. Visually, it lands squarely in that sweet spot between crafty and professional—it’s clearly handmade, but it’s legible and structured enough to build a real brand around.

The mood it creates is one of relaxed creativity. It whispers “small batch,” “personal touch,” and “creative process.” For my bakery project, it instantly communicated the human hands behind the product, which was exactly the brand perception we needed to establish.

From Logo Draft to a Complete Brand System

Starting with the logo, The Kubano proved incredibly flexible. We used it for the business name itself, set simply in a single color against a clean background. Its inherent character meant we didn’t need to add elaborate illustrations or complex shapes—the typeface was the illustration. On the first packaging mockup for a coffee bag, the brand name rendered in The Kubano on a simple kraft label sticker looked authentic and market-ready.

That’s where the real test began. A good display font needs to work across the entire system. So I pushed it further:

In every instance, it maintained consistency while adding that crucial spark of personality. It became the recognizable voice of the brand.

Practical Observations From Real Mockups

During testing, a few key observations solidified its place in the project. As a predominantly display font, it excels in headlines, logos, and short phrases. I wouldn’t set a full paragraph of body text with it—that would sacrifice readability. But for the key messaging that needs to engage and evoke feeling, it’s perfect.

On a dark background, its thicker strokes held up beautifully. On a shop sign mockup, I imagined it painted on wood—it felt completely natural. Its quirky nature also made it ideal for accent text. On a menu, using a clean serif for descriptions, we employed The Kubano for the section titles like “Pastries” or “Fresh Loaves,” creating a delightful and clear hierarchy.

The Critical Step: Testing Before Commitment

Before locking it into the final brand guidelines, I did what I always recommend: live environment testing. I placed it on actual product mockups in context, viewed it on mobile screens, and even printed a few samples at different sizes. This confirmed its legibility at smaller sizes for things like tags and its impact at larger sizes for posters. Checking for things like multilingual support and included file formats (like OTF and TTF) is also part of this practical phase, ensuring it works technically for both print and digital assets.

Finding the Right Partners: Font Pairing for Harmony

A personality-driven font like The Kubano needs a calm, supporting partner. For this brand, I paired it with a simple, geometric sans-serif. The sans handled all the utilitarian text—body copy, prices, addresses, nutritional info—with clean neutrality. This pairing created a balance where The Kubano could be the expressive star without overwhelming the viewer. For a different project, like a skincare brand aiming for organic luxury, pairing it with a delicate serif could yield a beautiful contrast of handmade and refined.

The pairing principle is key: let your display font shine in its designated roles, and use a more readable, neutral typeface for supporting text. This ensures professionalism and maintains audience engagement without sacrificing clarity.

Where The Kubano Finds Its Home

My experience with this Script Amp category font showed me its natural habitats. It’s a powerful tool for:

Its commercial font license opens it up for use across all these client assets, from physical packaging to digital templates, making it a versatile investment for a brand system.

In the end, The Kubano transformed that bakery project. It started as a font swap on a bland mockup and became the foundational voice of a visual identity. It taught me that sometimes, the right typeface isn’t about filling a template; it’s about unlocking a feeling. And for any project needing a dose of authentic, crafty fun, this quirky handwritten font might just be the key on your keyboard.
